We see here two paintings by the Belgian artist Erik Pevernagie.
"Finally things had lost their weightiness" (three balloons) and
"The unbearable heaviness of being" (Squatting girl).
Lightness and weightiness are both linked
to a philosophy of life. They are choices in life.
These pictures translate
the philosophical contradiction of lightness and heaviness.
Heaviness can be the embodiment of
a sense of responsibility.
It can be the expression of maturity
It can be the result of profound meditation
It can be the emission of a search for meaning in life.
But weightiness may also lead to a feeling of oppression
when it is felt as a burden:
an unbearable burden.
In that case,
time has come to release
and get rid of a stuffy environment.
Then time to let loose,
to liberate oneself
and let go the balloons.
In this way one can feel
the fresh air of a new wind
and dispose of the feeling
of physical or mental dependence
Things lose then their gravity.
The unbearable heaviness of being.
