During the late 1800s , the period of reconstruction after the Civil War ends abruptly with the
Compromise of 1877 , also known under the name of The Great Betrayal . From there was
established the "Jim Crow" laws and then began a racial apartheid regime concentrated in
the southern United States. In addition of being separate in buses, colored people were
separated in several departments and public places , such as hospitals, restore and schools
Denigration , imprisonment, even after a long time, there was still no changes and racism
against black people was even more important. But nobody was expecting what was going to
follow during the rest of the 20th century. Being a very important period for the struggle
against racial segregation in the United States
Early in 1900s , jazz was officially created, came from work songs of African slaves , jazz
got quickly monopolized by African Americans . Later during the Prohibition period of the
United States, in 1920, is recognized as the emergence of jazz and its popularization . With
the creation of several laws prohibiting the production, transportation and sale of alcohol,
several illegal bars were created. Places known the sale of alcohol and especially by
the presence of jazz. Also, places where some artists discovered their passion for jazz.
With the end of the prohibition, most bars closed, but the effects were permanent : jazz
had already spread throughout the whole United States.
With the consequences created by this period , many people took the opportunity and brought
the jazz in front for fight against racial segregation.
Although black artists had not yet accepted in important theaters , they were still requested
often for concerts, resulting in one of the few
profession where you could see a black person and a white person together, publicly.
With the rapid mounted of jazz music, we could also see an increase in protests against racial
segregation to a point where artists even started to make song protesting the current
regime. Then it was time for Marthin Luther King to show the importance of jazz with a
speech in 1964. Some years later it was the end of racial segregation in the United States
, which also marked the end of the the important jazz period.
Even with the end of the segregation , jazz music is always present and greatly influence
modern music , jazz today still rallied crowds, as for example the Montreal Jazz Festival
, a festival dedicated to this music and its derivative that has existed for over 31 years
Finally, this is just one example of the importance of music among others . Whether to protest
.
, to please or to communicate a message, the influence of music is everywhere and will
always continue to surprise us . So , seeing how modern music has evolved , can we say
that current music accurately reflect our society? An issue that deserves reflection.
